DAILY ENGLISH CONVERSATION 1

What is your hobby?
Adi      : Hi Eka, why do you collect many stamps?
Eka      : Ohh…. Hi Adi. I am collecting the stamps for my collection.
Adi      : What do you mean?
Eka      : Yes, actually my hobby is collecting stamps.
Adi      : Why do you like collecting stamps?
Eka      : Because I like to see the unique pictures of the stamps. How about you, what is your hobby?
Adi      : Hmm… I think I don’t have hobby. Should we have a hobby?
Eka      : Not really. But in our lives we must have something we like most which is called hobby.
Adi      : So, hobby is a pleasure. Then, I think I have a hobby now.
Eka      : Of course, so what is your hobby?
Adi      : I like to read comics especially detective Conan.
Eka      : That is your hobby. Reading comic. Do you have all of detective Conan’s collection?
Adi      : Yes, I do. I even go to the black market because the original comics have not yet been published. How about your stamps collection?
Eka      : So far I have collected stamps from some countries but I still should find other stamps.
Adi      : Do you need much money for your hobby?
Eka      : Yes of course I need much money because I order the stamps so it costs little bit expensive.
Adi      : Wow…. Your hobby is expensive.
Eka      : Yeah but I like to do it.
Adi      : Okay good luck with your hobby.
Eka      : Thank you.

Why do you look confuse?

Indah   : Hi Yeni, why do you look confuse?
Yeni    : Hi Indah, I am browsing for a good bookstore in the internet. I should find a book for teaching in my course place.
Indah   : Oh…. I think you have problems.
Yeni    : Actually that is my problem. Do you know a good bookstore around here?
Indah   : I know one good bookstore which is very close to our school and the book collections are complete.
Yeni    : Would you like to go there with me tomorrow?
Indah   : I am sorry I can’t go there with you tomorrow because I should take my mother to the hospital.
Yeni    : That’s okay. Can you tell me where the bookstore is?
Indah   : Of course. Do you know the junction near our school?
Yeni    : Yes I do. Why?
Indah   : From the junction you should turn right and go straight ahead until you see the handphone shop. The bookstore is across it. Can you imagine that?
Yeni    : Yes, I can. I think it is easy to find it.
Indah   : Of course. The bookstore is very famous here because the books are very cheap and the collection is complete.
Yeni    : Okay tomorrow I will go there. Thanks for the information.
Indah   : You’re welcome.

Have you finished doing your math assignment?

Ita        : Hi Rita, have you finished doing your math assignment?
Rita     : No, I haven’t. I am not feeling well today.
Ita        : What happens with you? Are you sick?
Rita     : No, I am just not feeling well.
Ita        : You should go to the Doctor.
Rita     : But I don’t have money to go to the Doctor because My father hasn’t yet sent me money.
Ita        : Do you want me to help you?
Rita     : No, thank you. I have asked for your help many times.
Ita        : It’s okay. Your health is important. As long as I can, I will help you.
Rita     : Thank you. You are very kind.
Ita        : You’re welcome. Maybe next time I will ask for your help.
Rita     : I will help you as I can.
Ita        : How about your homework? May I help you to do it? We should submit it tomorrow.
Rita     : Thank you. I don’t know what I should say to you.
Ita        : It’s okay. I am happy to help you.

ENGLISH GEOLINGUISTICS


Geolinguistics is the study or science of linguistics in relation to geography. Geographical linguists analyze and segment the world based on the different speech patterns and forms of communication. There are two different areas of emphasis in linguistics geography. The first area starts from the geographical perspective and seeks to identify the different languages spoken in all parts of the world. The second area of focus starts from the linguistic perspective and looks to see how language changes in different areas. The differences are subtle. The geographical first perspective may create a map of the world’s languages while the linguistic perspective may examine the different dialects in a specific region.
Language geography is the branch of human geography that studies the geographic distribution of language or its constituent elements. There are two principal fields of study within the geography of language: the "geography of languages", which deals with the distribution through history and space of languages and "linguistic geography", which deals with regional linguistic variations within languages. Various other terms and subdisciplines have been suggested, including; a division within the examination of linguistic geography separating the studies of change over time and space; 'geolinguistics', a study within the geography of language concerned with 'the analysis of the distribution patterns and spatial structures of languages in contact', but none have gained much currency.
Many studies have researched the effect of 'language contact',  as the languages or dialects of peoples have interacted. This territorial expansion of language groups has usually resulted in the overlaying of languages upon existing speech areas, rather than the replacement of one language by another. An example could be sought in the Norman Conquest of England, where Old French became the language of the aristocracy, and Middle English remained the language of the majority of the population.
Linguistic geography, as a field, is dominated by linguists rather than geographers. Charles Withers describes the difference as resulting from a focus on "elements of language, and only then with their geographical or social variation, as opposed to investigation of the processes making for change in the extent of language areas." To quote Trudgill, "linguistic geography has been geographical only in the sense that it has been concerned with the spatial distribution of linguistic phenomena." In recent times greater emphasis has been laid upon explanation rather than description of the patterns of linguistic change. The move has paralleled similar concerns in geography and language studies. These studies have paid attention to the social use of language, and to variations in dialect within languages in regard to social class or occupation. Regarding such variations, lexicographer Robert Burchfield notes that their nature "is a matter of perpetual discussion and disagreement". As an example, he notes that "most professional linguistic scholars regard it as axiomatic that all varieties of English have a sufficiently large vocabulary for the expression of all the distinctions that are important in the society using it." He contrasts this with the view of the historian Professor John Vincent, who regards such a view as:
"a nasty little orthodoxy among the educational and linguistic establishment. However badly you need standard English, you will have the merits of non-standard English waved at you. The more extravagantly your disadvantages will be lauded as 'entirely adequate for the needs of their speakers', to cite the author of Sociolinguistics. It may sound like a radical cry to support pidgin, patois, or dialect, but translated into social terms, it looks more like a ploy to keep Them (whoever Them may be) out of the middle-class suburbs." (John Vincent, The Times)
Burchfield concludes that "Resolution of such opposite views is not possible", though the "future of dialect studies and the study of class-marked distinctions are likely to be of considerable interest to everyone".
In England, linguistic geography has traditionally focused upon rural English, rather than urban English. A common production of linguistic investigators of dialects is the shaded and dotted map showing where one linguistic feature ends and another begins or overlaps. Various compilations of these maps for England have been issued over the years, including Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary (1896–1905), the Survey of English Dialects (1962-8), and The Linguistic Atlas of England (1978).
